“You can’t wait until the fear goes away before you take the action that you’re actually afraid of; the only way it goes away is by taking the action.” ~Maria Shriver
It’s Day 4 of the Money Mindset Challenge and we’re talking about jumping, with both feet, out of your comfort zone.
All right, can I give you a virtual high-five right now?
I’m so proud of you for making it this far and sticking with this challenge.
My hope is that each day you are feeling not only inspired but, EMPOWERED! No more sitting on the sidelines waiting for your life and your business to magically develop into perfection.
Instead you’re joining me, and your sisters in business, that aren’t taking “no” for an answer. That are taking chances, getting out of their comfort zones and reaching for their own personal vision of success.
Pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone looks different for each of us.
I personally have never found pushing myself in business to be exceptionally scary. Sure there are moments of anxiety but I’ve never felt like it paralyzes me in a way that keeps me from moving forward.
However, there is something that does scare the heck out of me. Even to think about it right now, in this minute, causes my heart to race and an instant feeling of panic comes over me.
That scary something for me is scuba diving.
I want to share a personal story with you that terrified me beyond anything I ever imagined and the kicker…. I made the decision to put myself in that position.
Years ago I heard Maria Shriver speak about overcoming her fear. The feeling of her knees buckling and feeling like she was going to throw up at any second. Fear so great that she would do almost anything to get out of it.
But then she shared how she felt after she stepped into the fear and took action despite everything she was feeling. She described her feelings of empowerment and freedom.
Then she challenged the listeners to step into their fear and take action.
When I heard her challenge I knew instantly what that looked like for me. For me it was learning how to scuba dive.
For me scuba diving was facing two fears. The first, which is a mild fear of being in the water. I’m not a very strong swimmer so I’ve never been particularly fond of the water.
The second is fear based on claustrophobia. Tight and confined spaces scare the dickens out of me so I had never considered scuba diving to be something “fun” I wanted to engage in.
So why would I choose scuba diving as my challenge to overcome?
Because my husband LOVES it and I wanted to be able to experience it with him. He had been a certified diver for years and I knew I was holding him back from something he loved.
So together we did scuba diving lessons, (yes he recertified himself).
I have never, ever, ever had something that took so much ‘mind over matter’ focus. I was so far out of my comfort zone that I was barely hanging on by a thread. I had so many heart-pounding, utter panic, take my breath away moments over those few weeks.
But I did it!
And guess what… Maria was absolutely right.
I felt empowered and free. I felt like I had climbed my own Mt. Everest.
In a nutshell, I knew I was unstoppable.
So what about you? What’s happening in your business that is causing fear & anxiety?
Are you experiencing an income flat line because you’re too afraid to step outside of your comfort zone?
If talking to new leads, selling your services and stepping into the role of a leader makes you feel queasy and a little weak in the knees, just know that you’re not alone.
I don’t know a person on the planet that doesn’t feel that way at one time or another.
That feeling isn’t what’s holding you and your income back though… it’s what you do with that feeling that’s keeping you stuck.
I wish there was a magic wand I could waive over you that would take all that anxiety and fear away.
However, without conquering it you would never feel a sense of accomplishment and achievement.
So let’s talk about how you can overcome your fear and step out of your comfort zone with a sense of knowing that “it’s all going to be alright”.
Step #1: Clearly define, “What’s the worst thing that can happen.”
In business, more often than not, we think that the worst thing that can happen is a potential client says “No” to working with us.
Let me let you in on a little secret.
In truth, they aren’t saying no to you, they are saying no to themselves and their transformation.
Once you cement that into your psyche you won’t let a simple “no” throw you into a tailspin.
Step #2: Get comfortable in that space outside your comfort zone.
Your comfort zone is comfortable because it’s where you know what to expect. Going out on a limb can be scary because you might fail. You might lose something. But you might also gain something!
In order to become comfortable with that uncertainty, you’ll need to practice the following:
Non-attachment. When you decide to do something, do it for its own sake, not so that you can get a particular result. If you promote a program and someone says no, remember they are saying no to themelves not you. In other words, let go of your attachment to a certain outcome and instead, focus on the joy of doing whatever you do in your business and the right clients will be naturally attracted to you.
Step #3: Build an ‘out-of-your-comfort-zone’ muscle.
Learning to embrace the feelings of fear and anxiety that come with being outside your comfort zone takes time and practice.
You need to build that muscle.
Nowadays I get excited to try new things and to push myself into experiences that make me feel uncomfortable.
Because no matter the results I know I’m growing, learning and thriving in a place that most of the people on the planet are too afraid to visit.
I believe you have it in you to live outside your comfort zone.
There is a place inside of you that is ready to take chances, feel uncomfortable, (and let’s face it… probably feel like you’re going to throw up every now and then). But it’s also the space where you will blossom into the kick-ass rockstar female entrepreneur that you know you are meant to be.
