Business Strategy = Success Strategy

I am often asked, “What is the best business strategy to use when first getting started in building an online business?” I know that the answer the person asking wants would come in the form of a numerical list of what to do first, second, third and so on. While that list theoretically exists, I believe there is also another area of life as a business owner they should be reviewing while building a successful business.
There is a quote by Jim Rohn that says:
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
Take those words in and really contemplate their meaning.
You-are-the-average-of-the-five-people-you-spend-the-most-time-with.
Now make a quick mental list of the five people YOU spend the most time with when it comes to your business.
While there is no real scientific data to back that statement up I believe that merely through the laws of nature it becomes a phenomenon that we all experience.
Let’s say that the person you sit next to at work is the biggest “Debbie-Downer” and “Negative Nelly” that walks the planet. Eventually that type of energy is going to wear you down, (no matter how positive you are). On the other hand, if the person sitting next to you is an “Eternal Optimist” always sharing a positive outlook they will naturally raise you up and bring sunshine into your world each day.
When you made the decision to start your own business I’m sure there were many things you imagined it would bring into your life. Maybe you imagined increased freedom in your schedule, more money in the bank account or a way of influencing others that you previously didn’t have. The one thing I’m sure you weren’t thinking about is the reaction others would have to you starting your own business. Allowing any disbelief or negativity by others to influence you can most definitely be a recipe for disaster.
I’m sure we can agree that starting a business is HARD WORK!! I mean, really hard work. That’s why it’s so important to surround yourself with people that support your dream as well as challenge you and make you a better person.
I like to think of it as your “Sphere Of Influence”!
Don’t get me wrong… I’m not telling you that you shouldn’t hang out with your crazy neighbor Jim that lives down the road, who makes you laugh so hard you cry every time you see him. There is a place for Jim in your life… just not in your “Sphere Of Influence”.
My philosophy is this… choose five people that you allow into your “Sphere Of Influence”. These five people are the only people that you allow to influence you in the decisions you make for your business. They will typically be five people that have business experience that exceeds where you are in your journey as a business owner.
The goal will be to become the average of those five people. Your job is to take their experiences, (good and bad), and apply them to where you are in your business. You’ll find that it will ultimately be a good mix of valuable information and will allow you to grow your business through real world experiences.
Remember, great mentors don’t hold back. They share openly and willingly with those around them as part of the natural evolution as business owners. In turn, you will be able to share with those that haven’t made it as far as you have yet in their journey as business owners, thereby perpetually fanning the flames of the mentor/mentee relationship.
The bottom line is this… When it comes to your business success, choose the five people that are most suited to influence your decisions and give them access to your “Sphere Of Influence”. (Kick everyone else out!) By listening to their words of wisdom you will naturally become the ‘average’ of those five people and their experiences. It is a win-win for everyone because as your experience level increases you will then become influential to someone else down the road.
