Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about goal setting.
It’s taken me a long time to learn the right way to
set goals that actually produce results.
If you’re reading this than most likely you are building some time of business. Maybe it’s a coaching or consulting business. Maybe you’re a member of a network marketing company. Maybe you have a product to sell. In any of those scenarios it’s easy to work your tail off and never see the projected results.
I know this because I’ve spent more hours than I can count in that unrelenting cycle.
I would set goals that I thought were really good but never seemed to reach the desired results. For a long time I thought the problem was me and my follow-through. As it turns out, that wasn’t the case.
It took me until the beginning of 2016 to really get a handle on the anatomy of a good goal and what makes one better than another.
My goals had two major flaws, (and maybe you can relate).
They were too big, (making them unachievable).
They had no form of measurement, (making them impossible to score).
Without these two very important characteristics in mind when I was setting my goals I constantly set myself up for failure.
Not failure in the sense that I wasn’t growing my business, (because I was).
Not failure in the sense that I wasn’t generating more revenue each year, (because I was).
Failure in the sense that I never felt like I truly completed a project as originally planned and it felt like I always had a million open loops floating around in my brain.
One of the quickest ways to crush a great idea is to set goals around it that are too big, unrealistic and unachievable.
I recently did a Facebook Live training in my group where I broke down the anatomy of a great goal.
