Myths and Limiting Beliefs

If there’s one thing I’m sure of it’s that building my own business has forced me to deal with many limiting beliefs I never knew I had. 

There was the one I had around my money mindset.

There was another one that focused on imposter syndrome.

Then there was the one around charging what I’m worth.

Have you ever felt yourself believing a limiting belief even though there is no hard evidence that it’s a fact?

Truthfully, I think it’s a right of passage into the world of entrepreneurship and each of us will have our own limiting beliefs that need to be dealt with before we can move on in our business. 

Since Kathleen and I have worked with so many health coaches over the years, we have unique insights about which myths or limiting beliefs are the most common roadblocks when it comes to growing their business.

We are covering some of the most common myths that hold back health coaches at one time or another and sharing our best recommendations for getting past them.

MYTH #1 – YOU NEED A BIG EMAIL LIST TO MAKE MONEY

It’s way more important to get the RIGHT people on your email list and then you don’t need as many subscribers. This is why narrowing in on a certain niche is so important.  We know many health coaches who have profitable businesses with fewer than a thousand people on their email list.  They continue to grow their list of course, but you don’t need thousands and thousands of subscribers.

We all start with zero subscribers, and we hear from coaches who get clients with fewer than 100 people on their email list that they are enrolling clients and filling their programs. It’s more about being specific about who you help, so you are attracting the RIGHT people to you; people who are interested in your area of expertise.

MYTH #2 – YOU CAN BUILD A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS WITH ONLY FREE CONTENT

Free content is a great place to start, but it’s not going to give you a complete roadmap or blueprint to get you where you want to go. Just like you probably tell your coaching clients, they can hunt and peck for information online, but it’s only going to give them mixed pieces of what to do and not the full blueprint. If you want the whole plan that will get you where you want to go, investing in mentors, courses and paid programs is always a good idea.

For example, each week on The Wellness Business Podcast, we share helpful tips for growing your wellness business, but we can’t possibly share the complete A-Z process in just a few episodes. We have the Wellness Business Accelerator program for that, which is an online course that teaches health coaches how to build a fully booked practice in 6 months. The right mentors will shorten your learning curve and dramatically speed up your growth and revenue generation.

MYTH #3 – YOU HAVE TO HAVE EVERYTHING FIGURED OUT BEFORE YOU GET STARTED

This falls partly into the category of imposter syndrome where you think you have to have all the answers before you even begin. Nothing could be further from the truth because you are going to learn as you go just like we all do.  

You are never going to have it all figured out before you start, so think about how much time is going to pass before you help people who need you if you believe this myth.  

If you are a certified health coach or nutritionist, you know more than enough to get going and the rest will unfold as you go along so keep moving forward and stay open to learning and being curious.

MYTH #4 – YOU HAVE TO FEEL CONFIDENT BEFORE YOU START  

This is a catch-22 because you don’t feel confident until you start, so how do you start when you feel that way? We have the answer! 

Get 3 pro-bono clients – these are people you coach for free for 1-3 months. We both did this when we were students at IIN, and it was the best thing we could have done because it boosted our confidence big time.
Just like you, we had those thoughts of “Can I really help people?” Once we worked with a few clients for free for 90 days, it was obvious that the answer was ‘yes’ and it helped us believe in ourselves instead of having those nagging feelings of self-doubt.

When you go from being very general about who you help to narrowing it down to helping a particular segment of the population solve a problem that they know they have, you stand out to your ideal clients and it’s so much easier to fill your programs. 

You don’t have to feel confident to start – getting started is what will build your confidence.

MYTH #5 – YOU NEED A BIG SOCIAL MEDIA FOLLOWING

The good news is that this isn’t true either, and here’s a little secret about social media; the smaller your following is, the higher percentage of your followers usually see your posts and your content. So, if you have 1,000 followers, you may have the same number of people seeing your posts as you would if you had 5,000 or 10,000. 

The social media algorithms favor content that is being watched, shared, has comments and saves, so focus on the quality of your posts rather than the quantity. This means doing as much video as you can, but you do not need a big social media following to grow a profitable wellness business.
